Facebook Plans Games And Movies Through Oculus Rift Headset

If Facebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg gets his hand on virtual reality, there are many things that the technology can possibly be. Zuckerberg has been open about venturing into the field of virtual reality and he has been updating his followers on how tests on the VR devices have been so far. A few months back, virtual reality company Pebbles Inc. has joined Facebook's Oculus team in developing the technology further.

Zuckerberg has purchased the Oculus Rift company last year in a $2 billion deal. Now, Facebook Inc.'s Oculus Rift will be selling movies, video games and streaming services via the virtual reality headset. The announcement of Facebook's new venture has been made last week. According to Mashable, streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu are coming up with virtual reality apps and will be jumping aboard the Oculus Rift VR headset. Oculus has also announced other new apps that will come to the headset.

The virtual reality device will retail for about $1,500 and will begin selling next year. Hollywood movie producers are eager to start making virtual reality movies. Zuckerberg also said that more than 100 movies under Fox will be coming to the headset beginning next week. According to The Market Business, 21st Century Fox is one of the Hollywood studios that will be co-opted for the project. Lions Gate Entertainment is another name on the Oculus Hollywood list.

"Right now we're entering the golden age of video and animation; most of what people share and experience is moving. After the video, it's VR." Mark Zuckerberg said, previously noting how a few years has made virtual reality an "awesome reality" when it was just the stuff of science fiction before. Zuckerberg also said that the initial sales for the device may be small, as consumers get accustomed to the virtual reality headset.

Fox claims to be the first studio to sell its movies on Oculus. Fox movies that will be coming to the headset include Alien and X-Men: Days of Future Past. The movies will be among those that will begin streaming in Oculus next week. Lions Gate is the studio behind The Hunger Games franchise.
