Impressive Benchmark Results For Intel Core i7-6850K 'Broadwell-E' CPU

Intel's next line of processors, Broadwell-E, is scheduled to arrive on the market some time this year, but tech enthusiasts already got an early look at the performance of the Intel 6850K CPU.

According to Tech Spot, four Intel chips are expected in the Broadwell-E line of processors: the Core i7-6800K, i7-6850K, i7-6900K and i7-6950X. Until now Intel itself and several motherboard makers confirmed the chips. Thanks to these leaks people have some early information on Intel's upcoming Broadwell-E processors.

Up to date, the most detailed information refers to the upcoming 6850K CPU. At least one Intel Core i7-6850K has being tested and a benchmark of the 6-core 6850K vs the Haswell-E 5820K made its way on to the web.

Aside from the improvements in the upgraded architecture, there are improvements in the manufacturing technology as well. Rather than built on 22nm used with Haswell-E, the new Broadwell-E processors are manufactured on the 14nm process. The user "Maintenance Bot" confirmed on the Overclock.net forums that the new 6850K Intel processor is notably thinner than the 5820K.

Thanks to the same user on the forums people got an early idea of the performance the 6850K is capable of. Maintenance Bot has posted benchmarks and photos of the 14-nanometer Broadwell-E part that features 12 logical threads and six cores.

By default, the engineering sample is clocked at a working frequency of 3.60GHz. However, in order to match the speed of the 5820K it was compared against for the purpose of testing, the 6850K was overclocked to 4.2GHz.

Maintenance Bot measured the two chips before starting the testing. It found that the newer model is just 1.12mm thick, while the 5820K is 1.87mm thick. From analyzing the photos, it can also be noticed a new IHS (integrated heat spreader) on the 6850K.

According to KitGuru, in the benchmark performed, the 6850K completed the task of running a 32M calculation in Super Pi mod1.5 XS in 8 minutes and 27.854 seconds. The current-generation chip completed the same task in 8 minutes and 38.886 seconds.

In Cinebench R15, the 6850K turned in a score of 1,311 compared with the score 1,191 achieved by the older chip. And in 3DMark Firestrike, the Broadwell-E CPU got a score of 9,440 compared with a score of 9,353 received by the Haswell-E chip.
