Elon Musk's SpaceX is serious in taking steps to pursue its ambition to Mars by 2018. To make it a reality further, the Tesla CEO has tapped into the design prowess of a known superhero costume maker to the stars.
Costume designer Jose Fernandez has been commissioned by Musk to come up with the zero-gravity environment for SpaceX, says Engadget. Details on the exact looks of the space suits are still on hold; however, varied news sources mentioned that the Tesla CEO expects a heroically stylish design on them.
SpaceX was also questioned in terms of the company's future plans, though it has not shied away from surprising revelations from time to time. In the case of Ironhead, Fernandez's company, the space suits may have all the heroic embellishments on them; however, the noted costume designer has a big plate to fill ahead.
In a related Techspot post, Fernandez initially thought he was designing for an upcoming film. He was not aware of SpaceX then.
Musk had invited other companies to present design ideas for the suits; however, he apparently preferred Fernandez's take on the helmet's look. The known costume designer also said that he was only able to preview a helmet design to Musk, due to time constraints.
Both companies were then able to conceptualize a suit that Musk went for and is prepped by SpaceX to make it more suitable for space travel. The space transport and aerospace services manufacturer is taking all steps possible to bring humans to the Red Planet a few years from now.
Also, Elon Musk is not one who dabs into mediocrity and expects for their astronauts to explore the outskirts of the universe in style. The space suits would need to look not only practical for outer space use, as Fernandez wants them to have that Bond-ish vibe as well.
