Open Bionics and Eidos Montreal join forces to create fashionable and affordable prosthetic designs. As result of their venture, the two companies will release next year Deus Ex-inspired prosthetic arms.
The artificial augmentation of humans is a key theme in the "Deus Ex" video game series. According to the Independent, Eidos Montreal, the game's developer, has announced on the website augmentedfure.com a partnership with Open Bionics, a company specialized in low-cost prosthetics. They plan to create fashionable, affordable and high quality arm designs inspired by the Deus Ex universe.
For the moment, the two companies have created two prosthetic arm designs. One of them is based on the arm of Adam Jensen, protagonist in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The other design is based on the wider universe as a whole.
The two prosthetic arms are able of complex movements, from rotating wrist to flexing fingers. Both are colored in gunmetal gold and grey, reflecting the augmented superhero of the Deus Ex series.
Open Bionics have partnered previously with Disney to create prosthetic designs inspired by movie titles such as Iron Man. Star Wars and Frozen. The franchise believes in a possible future where human augmentation will become commonplace, changing warfare and society in equal measure.
The company is bringing the prosthetic arm designs to life by using 3D printing technology. As part of their aim of making their prosthetics affordable, they also plan to release the designs and blueprints royalty free.
According to Engadget, with the help of gaming hardware company Razer, Open Bionics and Eidos Montreal plan to showcase the prosthetic arms at multiple events, including Gamescom and E3. Thanks to motion tracking technology, people will be able to digitally try on the arm and control it through the Razer Stargazer webcam.
The Deus Ex-inspired prosthetic arms are expected to be launched on the market in 2017. They could become attractive to amputees with a passion for the Deus Ex franchise universe.
