With technology rapidly developing, console manufacturers are trying their best to keep up, while still keeping true to their internal beliefs and practices. Nintendo has announced they are coming out with the new Nintendo NX and Sony is in the midst of developing the PlayStation 4.5 Neo.
The team behind the Nintendo NX, which is due for release in March 2017, has said very little about the specs of the unit, but promise that is definitely more about content than it is about hardware. According to Tech Radar, the NX will be unlike anything that Nintendo has released thus far.
Nintendo's President, Tatsumi Kimishima, has said, "We're not building the next version of Wii or Wii U. It's something unique and different." With the subpar success of its latest console, Nintendo is surely taking a risk with the NX - and if history is anything to go by, the company is in for a good ride.
Its biggest portable success is the Nintendo DS, which many scoffed at during its early release. However, everything changed and the device revolutionized handheld gaming. The NX, which will hopefully follow the footsteps of the DS, will reportedly incorporate a new control method.
Nintendo's NX will have stiff competition, especially in the audience that is looking at power. Those that prefer the best technology has to offer, as opposed to a content-focused experience, may be better off with Sony's PlayStation 4.5 Neo.
As reported by PC Advisor, the PlayStation 4.5 was confirmed only days before this year's E3, but audiences did not get a glimpse of it in the conference.
Andrew House, Sony Interactive's president, said that "[The PlayStation 4.5] is meant to sit alongside and compliment the standard PS4" and that the company will be selling both consoles throughout their life cycle. The PS 4.5 will offer a full 4K output, increased graphical power and will compatible with current PS4 games.
Because of the increased graphical power, the PS 4.5 is truly a console that will best suit graphics-heavy games, as well as Virtual Reality. It is expected the coming console will not require users to purchase the PlayStation VR headset, which is needed for the PS4. The PS4.5, or the Neo, is expected to have eight Jaguar CPU cores that run on 2.1GHz, an improved AMD GCN with 36 CUs running at 911MHz and 8GB at 218GBs of memory.
Sony is expected to release the PS4.5 at the Tokyo Games Show this September.
