New Dinosaur Species Found In Argentina: Find Out Why It's Named 'Gualicho' Meaning Cursed

Even in the present time, man is still making new discoveries about the Earth and its history. Particularly, living beings that walked around before humans populated the world. A group of scientists made an exciting new discovery in Argentina, as the unearthed a new dinosaur species.

The discovery was a surprise, as the scientists expected a finding from the Carnotaurus or Gigantosaurus genus, yet came upon one that belonged to an entirely new family. As Yahoo! notes, "Gualicho" was discovered in 2007 in the province of Rio Negro. Actual analysis of the bones and fossils, however, did not begin until 2012.

As USA Today reports, Gualicho was named as such, because it is the local word for "curse." The name is not just an eerie whim, as the team that discovered the same went through several accidents to discover the remains of Gualicho.

These include organizational trouble, as well as bad vehicle accident. As a joke, paleontologist Sebastián Apesteguía of the Azara Foundation in Buenos Aires, shared that for any individual that experiences any bad luck in the area, "people say that someday made a gualicho on you."

Gualicho, it has been discovered, is a carnivorous dinosaur. Further, it stood on two lean legs, which enabled the animal to run quickly. Reportedly, Gualicho was not particularly large. In fact, it stood just above 6 feet and had arms that were only the size of a toddler's.

The arms, much like the T-Rex's, were not particularly useful to the dinosaur. However, because Gualicho belongs to an entirely new lineage, it is theorized that it acquired its arms, which connected to two fingers, separately from the tyrannosaurus.

Nevertheless, scientists have connected Gualicho closest to a lineage which lived in the southern hemisphere. As such, the discovery should help scientists learn more about dinosaurs native to South America.
