EA Origin App Is Shutting Down This April After Microsoft Terminates 32-Bit Support for Software

Origin is shutting down after more than a decade, replaced by 64-bit software.

Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts has announced the closure of its Origin game launcher, effective April 17. After over a decade of operation, the shutdown marks the end of the platform's service, which was originally launched in 2011. The move follows Microsoft's decision to phase out 32-bit software support, aligning with the company's shift to a 64-bit architecture in newer versions of Windows.

EA's Origin App Officially Retiring After 14 Years

EA confirmed the shutdown of its Origin app in a new FAQ update, noting that the app will no longer allow users to access their favorite games starting this April. According to Engadget, the company first announced plans to retire the platform back in 2020, signaling a move toward rebranding the launcher with an updated experience to support 64-bit systems. In 2022, EA introduced the EA app, which has since become the replacement for Origin, offering quicker game launches and a more modern interface.

Microsoft Pushes for 64-Bit EA App

This closure is part of a broader industry shift prompted by Microsoft's decision to discontinue support for 32-bit applications on Windows. Users will need to transition to 64-bit software, including EA's new app, for optimal performance. While Windows 10 users will be impacted by this change, Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 for a more seamless experience with modern applications.

EA's Iconic Games Continue to Thrive Despite Changes

Electronic Arts remains a powerhouse in the gaming industry, known for its popular franchises such as "The Sims," "FIFA" (now rebranded as "EA Sports FC"), and the upcoming "Skate 4." The company has also made a significant impact with its "Star Wars" games, including the highly regarded "Star Wars Jedi" series. While the shutdown of Origin signals the end of an era, EA's gaming legacy is far from over as it continues to release new titles and innovations in the industry.
