Since its inception, Nintendo as a company has been a unique one. As opposed to beating the competition with powerful processors and the best technology for realistic graphics, Nintendo has opted for the more quiet road.
That is, they focused more on the games themselves and the experience that they could give players. It is likely that Nintendo will continue on this path, possibly even changing the future of current trends in the gaming industry.
Nintendo's Portable-Console Specialty
Nintendo has, however, always paved the way for portable consoles. And even in a world where games can be played on handheld devices, the 3DS has proven to still be a success.
Nintendo Pioneered Augmented Reality With The 3DS
Many might have already forgotten, but Nintendo arguably pioneered augmented reality, which is used in the very popular Pokemon GO. Though definitely not as sophisticated, the 3DS did make use of AR cards for relatively simple games.
With the 3DS, players were able to activate AR games by scanning the AR cards provided with the device. After which, players could then control and manipulate the images on the screen.
Nintendo And The Wii
The Wii, which has been a worldwide success, also proves the kind of technology that Nintendo can develop. It was the first console to make use of a remote device, of which the user's movements could be recorded and used to manipulate movements in the game.
Nintendo And The Future Of Virtual Reality
According to The Wall Street Journal, Shigeru Miyamoto has already discussed the possibility of touching on virtual reality with Nintendo's shareholders. "We've been looking at the technology, but we should also see how it fits into our products that are designed to use for the long term and how parents would feel about their children mounting VR devices."
The question then is not whether or not Nintendo has the technology or the intention to touch on VR, but how the company wants to portray the same.
Nintendo, with its vision for and understanding of its players, has all the potential to change virtual reality as it is now known. The company can, for example, take a classic like Mario Kart and finally give its players the ultimate racing experience. Nintendo would take the technology of virtual reality and give gamers an out of this world experience.
