Twitter Gets New Logo: The High Flying Bird Suggests Business Expansion

Twitter unveiled a new "Twitterbird" on June 6, which will be the new trademark symbol for the fast-growing company.

"Over the past six years, the world has become familiar with a little blue bird. The bird is everywhere, constantly associated with Twitter the service, and Twitter the company," said creative director Doug Bowman.

"Starting today you'll begin to notice a simplified Twitter bird. From now on, this bird will be the universally recognizable symbol of Twitter... There's no longer a need for text, bubbled typefaces, or a lowercase 't' to represent Twitter."

The new bird "grows out of love for ornithology, design within creative constraints, and simple geometry," Bowman said.

Twitter, which allows its members to post brief comments, links or pictures, claims to have more than 140 million active users, with the largest number being in the United States.

Why Makeover?

While it used to fly straight ahead, Techchrunch reports suggest that Twitter's new bird logo has its beak held high, representing a company ready to take off. According to Bloomberg's sources, close to Twitter, they informed that the company expects to generate $1 billion in sales in 2014, almost double eMarketer's prediction ($540 million in 2014).

The redesigned bird replaces both the old bird as well "T" or bubbled typeface "Twitter" logos. It will automatically be pushed to all official Twitter buttons, but sites may want to update any static Twitter logos they display.

A recent survey found one out of seven Americans who go online use Twitter and eight percent do it every day.

The company seems optimistic about the money it will make as it completes the roll out its self-serve ad buying interface for purchasing Promoted Tweets, Accounts, and Trends. However, analysts suggest that Twitter will have to be careful not to overrun its site and apps with ads, or engagement could take a nose drop.

Further, the same report has also claimed that Twitter has plans for international expansion and promotion, though, which could make sure it doesn't have to squeeze its current flock of 140 million active users too hard.

Hence, it is clear that the bird has been successful on both mobile and desktop. Further, Twitter started selling ads on mobile only in February .

At last, one more fact about the design, "This bird is crafted purely from three sets of overlapping circles -- similar to how your networks, interests and ideas connect and intersect with peers and friends. Whether soaring high above the earth to take in a broad view, or flocking with other birds to achieve a common purpose, a bird in flight is the ultimate representation of freedom, hope and limitless possibility."
