Though Facebook's foray into the public market has left many with a bitter taste, the company can take safe breath for right now.
In June 2012 edition of the World Map Of Social Networks, social media strategist Vincenzo Cosenza has declared that without question Mark Zuckerberg's social network is dominating the world's social media market.
On the other hand, Twitter is vying for second place with a handful of other contenders.
The map looks at the most popular social networks in 137 countries. In 126 of those countries, Facebook wins. There is really no network that even comes close to Facebook's 900+ million users and its number-one position around the world.
Take a look at the map on your left to see just how prolific Facebook is. Facebook has 232 million users in Europe, 222 million in North America, and 219 million users Asia.
That's some massive domination, but there are still a handful of networks that have their eyes on the big one, including Twitter.
Twitter is the second-most popular network in Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. It is in third place in Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Norway.
Neck-and-neck with Twitter is LinkedIn (in North America) and Badoo (in Europe).
While Twitter is doing its best to stave off the other networks for second place, Facebook has been solidifying its lead.
To see how the social networking world has changed in three years, check out Consenza's map from June 2009. It's still pretty blue, but nowhere near as solid as the latest map:
Who's Not on Facebook?
In Russian territories, Facebook is not so popular, and there is an ongoing battle between the two main local players, V Kontakte and Odnoklassniki.
Then there is China where QZone claims 560 million users, followed by Tencent Weibo (337 million) e Sina Weibo (334 million). And of'course no Facebook.
Further, there is Iran where it is hard to access Facebook due to state censorship. Then there are Vietnam and Latvia, the countries are still likely to use local social networks: Zing and Draugiem respectively.
