Apple unveiled all-new "Retina display" MacBook Pro and updates of the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros on the opening day of WWDC by touting them as "The greatest Apple computer ever built."
Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco kicked off at Moscone Center (West) in San Francisco with some Siri jokes. But what really stole the show were the razor-thin MacBook Air and MacBook Pros the tech giant showed off: the sleek beauties all boasted of the much-anticipated Retina Display and the third generation Intel Ivy Bridge processor.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro comes packed with 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor. It is packed with 500 GB hard drive and 4GB of memory and is available for $1,199. But people looking for more can try the 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with 8GB memory that is available for $1,499. "[It's] the most beautiful computer we've ever made," said Phil Schiller, the senior vice president of worldwide marketing, during the unveiling of the next-generation MacBook Pro.
The 15-inch MacBook Pro features a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 4GB memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000 and Nvidia GeForce GT 650M. This one will come with 500GB hard drive and will be available for $1,799. "There has never been a notebook this thin, this light, and this powerful. It's an engineering breakthrough," Schiller said when presenting the 15-inch models. Another 15.4-inch version features 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, Intel HD graphics 4000 and Nvidia GeForce GT 650M, 8GB of memory and 750GB drive. This model will be available for $2,199.
All the new MacBook Pros (both 13- and 15-inch models) will also have two USB 3.0 ports and one Thunderbolt port. However, they will not come with optical drive.
The MacBook Pro with Retina display comes only in 15-inch models. They are priced at $2,199 and $2,799, depending on whether you want 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache or 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache. And though both the models come with 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory (configurable to 16GB), the higher priced MacBook boasts of 512GB flash storage while the lower priced model comes with 256GB flash storage.
Graphics include Intel HD Graphics 4000 as well as Nvidia GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching.
Connection and expansion ports include MagSafe 2 power port, two Thunderbolt ports (up to 10 Gbps), two USB 3 ports (up to 5 Gbps), HDMI port, Headphone port, SDXC card slot. Note that optical drive and Ethernet port are missing. The external optical drive and Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter are sold separately.
