'Pokemon Go' News: Warning On Pokemon Go Malware, 500k People Affected

More than half a million Pokemon Go trainers have downloaded this Pokemon Go Guide for Android and was officially downloaded from the Playstore. This so-called 'guide' isn't what it seems to be With millions of people downloading the app, it is inevitable that some people would want to take the advantage and jump in the band wagon. as it allows complete access to the infected phone - also known as malware.

The official Pokemon Go app by Niantic is already available worldwide - well, most countries, and there are people who want to take advantage of this by creating a Trojan application to go with the hit game, OtakuArt.com reports.

Explained by KasperSky AntiVirus, the Trojan cloaked itself as some sort of support app and named it: 'Guide For Pokemon Go'. By the time KasperSky Labs collected data to report, it had already infected at least 6,000 devices and phones.

KasperSky Labs also added,

"It doesn't start as soon as the victim launches the app. Instead, it waits for the user to install or uninstall another app, and then checks to see whether that app runs on a real device or on a virtual machine."

How does it work?

Once the malware detects that it is installed on a real phone, not a virtual simulation, it waits for a few hours before it contacts its server and proceed with call to action (CTA). This means that the people responsible for this Trojan can launch an attack anytime they want. The said malware also detects if its installation was done on a physical device or a virtual machine - you can only get vital information from real phones, not simulated machines.

For everyone's attention, the App's name is 'Guide for Pokemon Go New'. This might have been shot down from the store but it will be important to note that one must be vigilant when downloading support apps for Pokemon Go. To be very safe, its best to play the game as is, without any app support. Further, you need to check what permissions a new app is having before using it.

Also take note that this is not the only app with Trojan intentions, other support apps have reported to be invading phones with inital claims that they are guides for Pokemon Go.
