Apple's Quest For Wireless Technology Continues With Remote Charging

Apple's quest to bring everyone to a wireless world apparently will not stop at their latest wireless earphones. Recent reports reveal that the iPhone maker is seriously developing technology that will allow its devices to charge without plugging into a power supply.

Previous reports stated that Apple wanted its iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch devices to be charged not only wirelessly but also by remote.

Now, Venturebeat said that Apple was working with tech company Energous to make the device a reality. Energous is a public company in the U.S. listed at NASDAQ.

The tech firm is said to possess the "WattUp" device, which reportedly can accomplish Apple's desire to do wireless and remote charging. This means the device does not even need to be near a charging station to charge. The unit will charge if placed within a certain radius near the Wattup device.

Energous said in a statement that indeed it had plans to work with a major customer, but did not say if that customer was Apple. Apple has been notoriously good at hiding its trade secrets and may have coaxed Energous to be reticent about their planned project.

However, Energous' recent corporate filings revealed that they apparently possess a device that is ready for Apple compliance testing.

9to5Mac shared the content of Energous' corporate prospectus, saying: "We expect that our products and/or the reference designs will undergo UL/CE as well as FCC Part 15, FCC Part 18, SAR, California Energy Star and Apple compliance testing."

Venturebeat speculates that the device being referred to is the WattUp which Apple will evaluate whether it can synergize with the technology and design philosophy of the company.

Based on its description from Egregous' website, Wattup is a device that can do wire-free charging to many kinds of electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets, wearables, cameras, wireless keyboards and mice, headsets, sensors, LED lights, remote controls and toys.

Wattup charges these machines using a Radio Frequency (RF) system akin to a Wi-Fi system which enables safe and wire-free charging of energy at distances of up to approximately 15ft.

A phone can even charge while it is in motion as long as it is within the charging radius of the device. It can charge a maximum of 12 devices simultaneously.
