A new consumer survey from British mobile network O2 has provided us with updated statistics on our current smartphone usage habits. And in what may come as a surprise to some, making phone calls isn't even close to the top of the list.
Despite smartphone users making use of their smartphone for an average of 2 hours per day, phone calls were only used an average of 12 minutes per day, making them just the 5th most used feature on the devices. General internet usage came in at number one at nearly 25 minutes per day, with social media use 2nd at 17 and a half minutes per day.
The 3rd and 4th spot were listening to music and playing games, and while music listening may not be that surprising given it's a universal passion, the fact that the slightly more niche game playing also ranked ahead of phone calls is more so (and possibly a testament to the hardcore smartphone game players who make up for those users who don't play games).
Phone calls do still beat texting, which came in at 7th. Rounding out the top 10 were E-Mails in 6th, TV/Film in 8th, one second of daily usage ahead of Books which came in 9th, and camera usage bringing up the distant rear of the top 10.
The Top 10 List with Average Daily Usage Times is below:
1. Internet ~ 24:49
2. Social Media ~ 17:29
3. Music ~ 15:38
4. Games ~ 14:26
5. Phone Calls ~ 12:06
6. E-mails ~ 11:06
7. Texting ~ 10:12
8. TV/Film ~ 9:23
9. Books ~ 9:22
10. Camera ~ 3:28
What do you think of these latest survey results? Any surprises? Is it simply that we have more than ever to do on our smartphones that phone calls continue sliding down the list, or does it highlight the growing trend of verbal communication going the way of the dodo? Share your thoughts.
