Xpad, the World’s Most Affordable Tablet, Launched in Dubai; Will It See a Western Release?

The newest product in Simmtronics' Xpad line is their cheapest and most efficient tablet computer yet according to the company, which recently unveiled the new Cortex Arm 8 Multi-touch WiFi tablet at a news conference in Dubai. The tablet computer will retail for just 299 Dirhams (just over U.S.$81).

While one would be forgiven for thinking such an affordable tablet must be seriously lacking in capabilities, the new Xpad is actually a more than competent device that can hold its own with other, more expensive tablets.

The Wi-Fi enabled 7-inch tablet boasts a high-definition screen, and runs Google's Android 4.0 operating system, which is powered by the Cortex Arm 8 processor with a 1 Ghz CPU. There's 3G connectivity, a multi-touch screen, 1080 HD video playback, expandable storage, and HDMI and USB ports. Certainly an impressive list of features for just 80 bones.

It's not surprising then that the Xpad series of tablets is taking the Asia-Pacific region by storm, with Simmtronics currently cranking out 300,000 units per month, with the aim to increase that production to 600,000 per month in the coming months.

"By launching the XPad in the UAE (United Arab Emirates), we believe in taking the tablet revolution to as many people as possible," said Simmtronics chairman Indrajit Sabharwal, to the Khaleej Times. "The multi-touch XPad has already been acknowledged as a formidable companion - whether for businesspersons on the go or for gamers requiring quality graphics for their entertainment or for those seeking to enjoy high-quality entertainment."

Unfortunately, it's unclear if or when the Xpad will see release outside of Asia and the Middle East. With their production facilities currently stretched to maximum capacity, and barely able to keep up with the demand in their currently serviced regions alone, it could be some time before they're ready to make a major move into another territory.

If the sales keep coming though, along with the positive reviews that have accompanied them, it seems only a matter of time before Simmtronics becomes a global player on the tablet scene, competing with the likes of Samsung and Apple in the burgeoning tablet market.
