In the tech world, the specifications of a machine - like the Alienware 17 and Acer Predator 17 X - normally sets it apart from its competition. In fact, better specs could spell the difference between a good experience and a great experience. But like with all other things, a "better" unit is completely subjective and it generally boils down to preference.
The Alienware 17: Specs
According to Tech Radar, the Alienware 17 is the first portable notebook that is designed specifically to take advantage of Nvidia's new 10 series GPUs. In order to do this, Alienware completely revamped its standard 17-inch gaming laptop by including a new chassis design, better cooling system and a newly incorporated Tobii eye-tracking.
The new cooling system alone reportedly keeps up the high-performance output of the Nvidia GTX 1080, as well as allows the system to run at a full 150W. Gamers also have the option to for AMD's Polaris graphics or the Radeon RX470.
Players will also have access to 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, 1TB SSD and an optional 120Hz Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display.
The Alienware 17: Design
The new device is the thinnest in the company's current lineup. In order for this to have happened, the Alienware 17 has its heatsinks, which are normally placed underneath the keyboard, were moved to the rear of the machine, behind its hinge. Generally, the notebook is also flatter and sharper, which again adds to its overall thinness.
The lid of the device is incredibly thin as it is only a sheet of metal that sports the 17-inch design.
The Acer Predator 17 X: Specs
According to PC Mag, the Acer Predator 17 X is a well-built system, which combines a 4K display with ample storage and plenty of port options.
More specifically the Acer Predator 17 X has a 3840 x 2160 resolution 17.3 inch display. It also comes with 512 GB SSD for Windows and programs and an additional 1 TB for data. In addition, the device has an HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports and a USB Type C port as well.
The Acer Predator 17 X: Design
The Acer Predator 17 X is also relatively chunky, especially when compared to the Alienware 17. The chassis is made of a black matte plastic which is soft to the touch and has red accents on the lid, its cooling vents and the speakers.
All in all, the device measures just 1.77 x 16.65 x 12.66 inches and weighs just 9.67 pounds.
