Negotiations underway
Bloomberg reported that Apple is negotiating with Sharp to use organic LEDs or OLEDs for their next generation devices. It follows the announcement that Sharp will invest about $566 million for the development and production of OLED facilities by June next year. Since talks are private, the person familiar with the matter requested to remain anonymous. This is because Apple still desires to increase the number of its suppliers for OLED displays.
According to Forbes, changing their handset display from LED to OLED would be a good move for Apple. OLEDs are more flexible and can be made razor-thin with the absence of the backlight, which is the reason why Samsung's Galaxy S7 Edge and Note 7 have bigger yet thinner screens. Besides, OLED displays have better contrast ratios compared to LCDs given that there are no backlights involved. This provides a power advantage because it does not easily drain the battery, an advantage that is seen on the newly released Apple Watch 2.
Bezeled and bigger sceens
If Apple is going to use OLED displays, then it would be no surprise to see bezeled iPhones the next time around. This is because OLEDs also allow smartphone manufacturers to design their phones with a curved edge or extend their display screens past the home button.
Last month, DisplayMate announced from its analysis that the latest Apple iPhone 7 has the best LCD display for mobile devices. However, the honor of being the best mobile screen goes to the Galaxy Note 7 that sports an OLED display.
If rumors are true, then the upcoming iPhone 8 this fall of 2018 would be bigger and better than the iPhone 7, thanks to its upgraded features.
