In what could be the trial of the century, Apple once again won back the $120 million verdict that Samsung appealed and had overturned in its court battle for the slide-to-unlock and quicklinks patent. From a decision of eight-versus-three from a full panel of judges, Apple emerged as victor in one of the patent infringement cases filed against Samsung.
Apple won, then lost, then won again
In a report from Ars Technica, the first trial had Apple awarded with $120 million in damages in its second legal face off with Samsung. However, Samsung appealed the decision and a jury of three decided to strip Apple of its claim citing invalidity and infringement on the patent cases filed by Apple. Fast forward today, Apple got the full court to review the case and again won the battle against Samsung for the second time.
Slide-to-unlock
One of the patent cases involves the use of slide-to-unlock feature by Samsung on its smartphones. The jury previously ruled against Apple saying it did not have the original idea due to a reference-art showing the similar concept in a touch-screen toggles for an air conditioner. This decision was reversed by an eight-versus-three decision saying that Apple would not have looked at a wall-mounted air conditioner to design a lock screen that would address the problem of pocket dialing.
Samsung still won a penny
The Verge reported that the judges maintained the decision of Samsung's win over Apple for its use of a video and galley patent demanding the Cupertino-based company to pay Samsung $158,400. However, the site added that a claim that would probably bring more damages against Samsung was sent back to the initial court to be reassessed.
Another huge battle between Apple and Samsung is set to happen next week with the Korean company heading to the Supreme Court to contest the pending payment of $548 million to Apple in a historical first design patent case hearing.
