Google's New Noto Universal Font Language Now Available For Download

Google has recently announced the Noto or "no more tofu" universal font language. The new open-source font is now available for download. This will supposedly solve the problem with "tofu".

It will prevent the display of blank boxes on the computer screen. This is encountered when the language used is not recognized.

Google's Noto Project

Google has collaborated with both Monotype and Adobe for the Noto project. The tech company admitted that it had worked on Noto for the past five years. They also revealed that there was an extreme challenge, especially with Arabic and Indic languages.

Monotype CEO and President Scott Landers described the project as the most significant of all time. He acknowledged their good and productive partnership with Google.

Landers also expressed his company's desire of more collaboration with Google. They plan on furthering the use of this type in many cultures, languages and geographies.

Noto was specifically developed for Google's Android and Chrome OS devices. Based on the press release, Noto should enable global communication across borders and time periods.

Noto Fonts Are An Innovation

New York University Assistant Professor Finn Bunton has expressed his excitement over the new Noto fonts. He revealed to The Christian Science Monitor that it's monumental and an amazing public service.

Apparently, this innovation lies in the translation technology used. The Noto fonts defy the previous problem encountered in displaying texts. Google was able to overcome limited codes. Bunton even praised the company for accomplishing such feat.

He added that Noto will provide visually harmonious and easy to read texts.

The Noto Fonts

Noto is able to support more than 800 languages and 100 writing scripts. According to Hot Hardware, that includes 110,000 characters in an entire set. They are also available in eight weights. Google is set to add emoji and more new characters.

You can download the Noto font here.
