Mulan News Update: Character Will Have An Asian Leading Man

Disney announced that they will give Mulan, a 1998 animated classic, in March 2015 the live action treatment. The fans of the movie got excited but also were somewhat concerne as Disney's not always good at cultural sensitivity.

After Disney announced its plan to launch a casting search for a Chinese actress to play Mulan for the anticipated live action of the 1998 animated film. Someone claimed that they had read Mulan script posted by an unnamed open letter. And it said that the script featured a white male lead?!?!

According to MTV, the anonymous letter said that the script featured white male lead who falls in love with Mulan and saves China in the process. The white man saves China not Mulan. Fans were evidently disappointed. . Whitewashing has been a major concern since Disney announced the live-action version of the film. A Chinese actress should play a Chinese heroine. The white savior male lead things is seriously disappointing. However, Disney swiftly stopped the madness. Telling that the spec script was a 'jumping-off point' for a new take on the legendary tale. They bought the script but they had every intention of changing it. "Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese." A source said.

The Cosmopolitan reiterate that Disney will hire new screenwriters -Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver - who both worked on Jurassic World. Little girls know Mulan as their role model because of her strength and boldness. She shimmied up that pole using medals! She did it for herself! Mulan doesn't need a white male lead savior that saves China instead of doing so all by herself. Disney also wanted to a hire a 16- or 17-year-old popular Chinese actress from China.

The movie Mulan has been with us since childhood - her boldness and strength made us look up to her. She was an icon that transcends generations. Fans would always back up Mulan despite some changes in the storyline.
