When someone asks you for recommendation on what open-world game to play in the hopes of getting a good story, you wouldn't have enough suggestions to go with. Most open-world games nowadays tend to focus more on what the players would do with their 'free will' rather than creating a narrow-path story-line. Personally, I would suggest The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as a good recommendation, among others like Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and maybe Far Cry 3 and some Watch Dogs - this has a good plot but some don't like it because of the 'misleading' graphics controversy.
I don't have ample time to try out Mafia 3 yet but fortunately We Write Things has posted a review for me to base on. Maybe in a few weeks I can make a proper schedule and finally start this game up, and by then I can post my own review.
It is posted that Mafia 3 story begins with our protagonist Lincoln Clay fresh from the Vietnam War. He comes home to his family and friends, but this time, wants to have a purpose with his new life in New Bordeaux. Lincoln bumps into his old friend Giorgi Marcano and as if a day never passed, they hung out.
The plot ultimately leads the player to the point where Lincoln is being offered to run part of New Bordeaux. This area is run by a Sammy Robinson and Marcano wants Lincoln to take him out of the picture. Lincoln, probably valued his honor, did not take the offer, and the rest of the story starts here. This is a classic best-friend-turned-mortal-enemy scene, because of one turning down an offer, things then start to turn sour.
Moviemaking
Videogames nowadays are like movies that you can take part of. Interview styles and perfomances are said to be brilliant thanks to the amazing actors that were motion captured. Impressive visuals showcased Mafia 3's cut scenes combined with superb storyline and acting, everything you experience in Mafia 3 feels that you are on that timeline.
Clichés can be exciting if properly executed
It's true that stories about revenge stories are 'over-used' nowadays. But Mafia 3 was brave enough to still go with the plan and executed it well. Clay's journey describes the most memorable accounts you will dig within open-world games this year. This observation has made me more interested into picking up the game over the weekend and start playing it.
Characters of the game carry out the story properly
What makes Mafia 3's story special are the personalities and unique auras of their characters. John Donavan (Lane Compton) is one of the reviewer's favorite characters - whom I'd bet will be one of my favorites too. Donavan works for the CIA but decides to help Lincoln in lots of law-breaking ways towards the violent path to vengeance. On top of that, he adds some comedy to the story, which lightens up the scenes every now and then - this has been a pattern for superhero movies lately too.
Another likeable character is Giorgi Marcano, voiced by Mercer Boffey. The voice acting is just simply spectacular. His acting greets you in the beginning of the game, which is a good strategy by hangar 13, Mafia 3's creator. Boffey's acting is so effective that you'd hate him everytime he does something bad to Lincoln.
Father James, another notable character for Mafia 3, has a well-rounded personality. He is Lincoln's father figure and everyone knows that a character like that has something to say or do with the events that will unfold.
Awesome gameplay
If there's anything gamers want, it's awesome gameplay. Mafia 3 does a very good job in providing a rewarding gameplay via its cover-based system. If you'd click on the link prior to this sentence, you'd know what I mean. Also I wrote an article about Mafia 3 being a game that provides a choice between violence and 'peaceful' stealth. The one thing that isn't in Mafia 3 that is on most 'daring' open world games is the ability to pick up prostitutes, which isn't a big deal, right?
Though I haven't really picked up this game, part of me says that it is a very recommendable game. I will, however, be taking a shot of my own review soon. Mafia 3 is now out on the PS4, PC, and Xbox One. Hit us with your comments below for your thoughts. Below is a trailer of the game to keep you giddy about it.
