Console development has caught up with how technology progresses. For instance, the gaps between console generations are getting closer and closer. There's even a mid-generation release this year and early next year. Could this be the start of an era where consoles will upgrade like PCs? Could there be peace between PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC gamers? Forget the second question, let's focus on the console upgrade part.
Just days ago, Sony announced that their upcoming PlayStation 4 Pro will be competing against PC instead of its traditional console rivals. The PS4 even pushes its developers to think more of themselves as PC game developers on top of being console game devs.
What does Microsoft have to say about this?
This time, it's Microsoft's turn to speak about this concept. According to WeWriteThings.com, Microsoft has also made a move to change the way how console gaming is. But instead of trying to compete and be like PC, they focus on their iteration of the Xbox platform.
As scheduled, gamers will be experiencing Project Scorpio by the holidays of 2017 but until then we are left in speculation on how Microsoft will steer its wheel during the development phases. Most people would think that they will follow PS4 Pro's path to be in the 'likeness' of PC but Phil Spencer feels and says otherwise. He thinks that PC will always be more iterative and continually upgrades and he elaborates that this is something PC gamers would highly value. As a Microsoft company, they would not step into the realm of 'PC upgrading' as respect to the hobby.
If not the PC way then what is in store for Project Scorpio?
Spencer now talks about his vision for their consoles as something that 'embraces' PC gaming concepts and not compete with it. He adds that they see Xbox customers also appreciate PC gaming and they want to make sure that both worlds will not collide. Here is a quote from Spencer to explain his vision on their gaming consoles:
"On the console side I think a faster iteration on the hardware is really a platform focus, of how do we build a platform so that game developers are building games, and they can as easily as possible target multiple consoles. We think we've landed that with Xbox One S and Scorpio with the partners that we're working with," Spencer talks with PCAuthority as reported by WeWriteThings.com.
