Microsoft has started sending out invites for the launch event of its upcoming operating system Windows 8. Per reports, the launch date is now set for Oct. 25 in New York.
Although the Redmond-based company is sending out invites for the launch, which asks invitees to "save the date" and reads "You're invited to celebrate. However, the launch details like time and venue are not mentioned. The agenda for the press event too is notably absent, but it is expected that the company will unveil its Windows 8 operating system.
It is not surprising that Microsoft chose New York as its base for the event, as the company has held launch events for its previous Windows versions like XP, Vista, and Windows 7 here.
Additionally, Microsoft officials recently shared that there will be a Manhattan holiday pop-up store opening this fall, but declined to confirm whether it would be in operation in time for the Windows 8 launch.
Windows 8 will be one of the major releases from Microsoft considering the amount of changes that have been made to the user experience. The platform's UI has shifted from a mouse-oriented one to a more streamlined option - touchscreen-oriented one. This shift can be seen in the way the Start Screen has changed and the way the Desktop is now treated as an app. However, the recent changes to the platform have met with mixed reactions.
The company has also added a Windows Store for downloading and managing apps, cloud integration with SkyDrive, Xbox LIVE, Internet Explorer 10, Easy Backup/Restore/Refresh, and plenty of other smaller but important changes and new features.
XP, Vista, and Windows 7 users can upgrade direct to Windows 8 Pro with a $39.99 download. Physical copies will also be available for $69.99.
