Nokia's two upcoming smartphones - Lumia 920 and 820 - based on the yet-to-be-unveiled Windows Phone 8 operating system from Microsoft, have been officially announced by U.S.-based carrier AT&T, the provider of the nation's largest 4G network.
The carrier stated that it will carry the Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia 920 as an exclusive, and it will offer the Nokia Lumia 820 as well. While the pricing for the devices is still uncertain, the company has made it clear that it is planning to make the devices available starting November, although no specific date has been mentioned.
"Exclusive to our customers and featuring unique innovations in imaging technology, wireless charging and a bright, sensitive display - all on the nation's largest 4G network - the Lumia 920 will be one of the hottest phones for the holidays," said Jeff Bradley, SVP Devices and Developer Services, AT&T Mobility.
The Lumia 920 is set to include the latest offering from Nokia in the form of Nokia PureView imaging innovation. The device has an 8-megapixel rear-facing shooter that records HD video in 1080p at 30 frames per second, while the front-facing camera records in 720p HD.
The device is also said to use an advanced floating lens technology, which enables the camera in the Lumia 920 to take in five times more light than typical smartphones without using flash. This technology also makes it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night. The technology also compensates for hand movements while the photo is being taken.
The Nokia 820, on the other hand, is a snappy, mid-range smartphone that has the same unibody look and feel as the other high-end Lumia smartphones. The device will arrive with an exchangeable shell design. The aim to introduce exchangeable shells has been initiated by Nokia to let customers select from a wide range of colors, and also to add wireless charging. There is also room to insert a micro SD memory card beneath the shell.
"We welcome AT&T's decision to offer the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820, which, when added to what we've witnessed in other markets, underscores the momentum behind our Lumia devices and the broader Windows ecosystem," said Olivier Puech, president of Nokia Americas. "Our continued collaboration with AT&T is an important component for Nokia's success in the U.S. market."
While the Lumia 920 is set to arrive in red, white, black, yellow, and cyan, the Lumia 820 will be available in black.
