Strange Signals Could Be From Stars Or Something Else

Daily astronomers receive radio signals. Determining where the signals come from can take some time, as many devices today emit radio signals. There are signals that come from space, and these are the ones astronomers focus on. Two astronomers have looked into an area in space where peculiar signals have been coming from.

Two astronomers have been looking at a group of stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, according to Phys Org. 2.5 million stars have been studied, and out of that 234 stars are said to be sending out strange signals. The study has been conducted by E.F. Borra and E. Trottier of the Laval University in Canada.

The 234 stars are of interest since they have been sending out signals that are comparable found on the Sun. This has caused the astronomers to wonder if it might somehow be signals from intelligent life, since so far only our solar system has intelligent life.

What's causing the signals though is still a mystery. There are other possible causes of it. Instrument and data reduction could be a potential cause, as Universe Today notes. Another cause could be rapid pulsations. It could also be ETI signals, as Borra has said in 2012. The astronomers have already ruled out some of these causes, such as rapid pulsations.

The signals are said to be pulses of light with a constant time interval between them. In 2012 Borra said in a research paper that such pulses could be found. The two then have checked the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to find the possible sources for these pulses of light. In their paper, the two astronomers said that the signals could be produced by peculiar chemical compositions, though they also said that it is unlikely that is the cause.

Some are unimpressed by the conclusions of the two astronomers. The Breakthrough Listen Initiative is a project to search intelligent life in the universe. The group has already studied the paper and gave it a rating of zero to one on the Rio Scale, which is a ranking system used by the SETI community for detections of intelligent life outside Earth. A zero to one rating means the finding is insignificant.

The paper of the two astronomers is already available online although it has not been peer reviewed yet, though it is said to be generating interest even if a peer review is still needed to make the work usable.

Recently it has been reported that a UFO hunter has been found dead under mysterious circumstances.
