The Wii U did not make waves in the gaming industry, which is partly why the Nintendo NX, now officially called the Nintendo Switch, has been highly anticipated. Arguably, other than the Wii U's game list, the upcoming device does not have large shoes to fill. But how exactly does the Nintendo Switch match up to its relatively average predecessor?
As BGR notes, there are particular features that were lacking in the Wii U. These include the lack of a third party and first party support. This is because while Nintendo was the sole provider of games for the console, the company did not constantly release new titles as well. But as a whole, the unit was also lacking in power, as it was no match for its co-generation competitors, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.
As Digital Spy notes, the biggest problem with the Wii U was its design. It was an awkward unit that sat on the television set of its user. On the other hand, there was also the large GamePad - of low-resolution and awful battery life - that acted like a second-screen for games and apps.
On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch looks to be everything that the public has been expecting and even more. Like what was rumored, it is a hybrid device that can act as a portable console and a home-docked unit. The overall design seems to run smoothly and is easily manipulated.
The Nintendo Switch also has various multiplayer features. Essentially, users can opt to share the device as is, connect with other units in competitive play, or a mixture of both. It also lacks the touch screen that was featured in the Wii U and will make use of cartridges instead of discs.
Though an official list of games has not been released yet, the Nintendo Switch is expected to come with a number of great titles. These include "The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild" and "Mario Kart 8." Other titles such as "Pokemon" and "Super Mario" might be confirmed within the next few weeks as well.
