Nintendo Switch Is As Average As It Gets

Every time Nintendo announces a new console, it's always going to get the buzz, but a recent blog post from ICO CEO and co-founder Thomas Bideaux gives some insights into just how big of a news it is. By using ICO's internal tracking software, Bideaux is able to examine the number of online stories generated by last Thursday's big announcement of the upcoming Nintendo Switch and compared it to the output of the likes of PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio announcements.

The Switch generates a fair amount of online articles

The results have shown that the Switch trailer along has led to 3,636 articles across the internet, very well ahead of the 1,068 articles from the Microsoft's Project Scorpio announcement, and a wee bit behind the 4,283 articles generated by the PS4 Pro. Bideaux claimed that the Switch's numbers might have been hampered by some news reports outside any major media event. Scorpio and PS4 Pro were both revealed at E3, just right in the middle of the holiday season. To add to that, the lack of details may have further limited the number of articles subjected to the Switch.

According to Bideaux

"I would consider this as a small victory for Nintendo, only because there is very little to even talk about the Switch at the moment," Bideaux stated. "Of course, there are a lot of interesting articles, but it doesn't appeal towards the media cycle the way the Sony press conference did, where there were full details about the PS4 Pro."

The Switch competes with other consoles

However, when Bideaux checked the number of websites that covered the Switch instead of the articles that they have published, he found out that Nintendo actually outlasted the competition. The Switch announcement was actually covered by 1,311 websites, far better than the 1,144 for the PS4 Pro, and a dismal 834 for Scorpio.

The Switch is as average as it gets

"The Switch is as average as it gets and does compete when it comes to online article regeneration," Bideaux explains further. "Nintendo is clearly behind the two other console manufacturers, and it shows in the monthly tracking we do on the coverage of each platform, so being able to get this amount of attention is good for them,"
