Apple's popular laptop line, MacBook Air, may undergo several changes in 2013, DigiTimes reported. The not-always-reliable Taipei-based tech site reported that Apple plans to bring MacBook Pro and MacBook Air product lines with upgraded innards. However, no major design changes are likely to happen.
Quoting supply chain sources, the report said Apple has already issued requests for quotations (RFQ) to Taiwan-based supply chain makers for some of its note books including the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. The revived models are slated to hit the market in June 2013.
According to the report, MacBook Air is likely to feature a new processor platform; however, the industrial design is expected to remain the same. "The sources noted that pressure on ultrabook vendors mainly comes from the Air's price since Apple is likely to reduce the prices for its existing MacBook Airs before the launch of the new models which could take away demand for ultrabooks," the report said.
Sources estimate that the total shipment of MacBook series may reach 17 million units in 2013; however, sales may not see a similar surge. In 2011, the Cupertino tech giant sold 12.88 million MacBook products and managed to sell nearly 9.78 million units in the first three quarters of 2012.
