Why Gamers Today Spend More Time Playing On Smartphones Rather Than Consoles And PC

I have been contemplating lately on why I have decreased my gaming time on consoles and seemed to have spent more time on mobile games and dips of quick multiplayer rounds. At first I thought maybe it's because of schedule, maybe I just got a bit busy that I no longer have time for playing videogames at the moment. Then I realized I still play on my phone or a quick match on the PC or console, be it Pokemon Go, or Goat Simulator, or a round of Loadout (yes, the game still exists), I still find time to tinker on games despite the busy schedule.

Then I thought, maybe I just lost interest on consoles and PC? My PS4 has been stagnant, and I just use my rig for writing stuff and some social media. Could it be that I lost interest on couch slash home gaming, or am I just getting old to endure gaming? Or maybe no interesting console titles yet? This made me wonder on how the statistics go for gamers and what they are currently tinkering now. Somehow I came across a post that says some statistic stuff about gamers.

As per Venture Beat, statistics say that 78% of gamers in the United states play on their smartphones. This is via SuperData Research and Paypal. Data also says that 49% of males in the US prefer playing on the PS4, 48% play on PC. The data was taken from 10,000 consumers thru 10 global markets, the aim was to study how people would consume digital media (not to eat, but somehow use digital media).

More women prefer casual genres, i.e. arcade, puzzlers than men. 30% of the respondents play mobile games when at work, and a staggering 13% and 10% of these people dare to play PC and console games while working. Though it is undisclosed if some of the respondents play games as a living.

Console gamers spend more versus PC gamers as they buy new title and content 9 days apart while PC gamers wait twice as long at 18 days. The analysis say that it is due to triple-A release cycles that have showed predictable patterns. The study also expanded beyond gaming statistics, like e-book consumption (again not eating e-books, but purchasing and reading them.)

In the realm of digital gaming, around 67% favored action games, 62% go for action-adventure and 53% for adventure only. 58% admit that they have downloaded a puzzle game of any sort during the past three months.

What does the data say to my quest on why I have dropped Console and PC gaming lately?

First of all, congratulations, you have learned something new today. Technically, the survey had nothing to do with my decisions, but it does say that people are now growing out of their comfort zones. Personally, I haven't anymore missed going back to the couch for some hours of gaming immersion as compared to the first few days where I would feel bad about not visiting my console or PC for some quick game.

I also transformed from a single-player intensive gamer to a multiplayer quickie. Everytime I pick up the Dual Shock 4 or turn on Steam, I directly go to multiplayer games. The reason is probably simple; having been busy lately, I can just drop out of the game anytime without being concerned on where I am in the story or being completely absorbed in by the hypnotizing power of single-player campaigns.
