Review Roundup: 'DmC: Devil May Cry' Gets A Positive Reception

People have been complaining about "DmC: Devil May Cry" since it was first revealed at the 2010 Tokyo Game Show. When Capcom first showed off how it planned to re-launch the once-heavyweight action franchise, confusion was rampant. A completely redesigned main character? A new developer? Surprise quickly turned into negativity, and it has plagued the title ever since.

Surprisingly, though, the Jan. 15 release date for the game has brought with it some welcome news: The game actually seems pretty good. Reviews are starting to pour out for the title, and by and large they are quite positive.

Kotaku compared the new "DmC" to a world in which New Coke actually turned out to be a good product, saying "Yes, the re-imagined Dante and the game he stars in-a revamp of Capcom's popular 'Devil May Cry' action series-is excellent."

Players take the role of Dante, part-demon, part-angel mercenary who's attempting to rid the city of Limbo of its demons. In addition to a refreshed look for its main character, the game also features a new combat system that reviewers praised for its flow, as well as a story that's a little more grounded when compared to the cheesy plot and dialogue of its predecessors.

Writing for Eurogamer, Rich Stanton praised the game while noting that, at times, it suffers from feeling tedious and frustrating.

"Ninja Theory has succeeded in revitalizing a classic series, but 'DmC' is almost a classic in its own right," he said. "Don't think too much about the lows, because the highs here are so very high, and show without question that Capcom has faith in the right developer. Ninja Theory has absolutely nailed the leading man and the combat system - by far the most important things."

Meanwhile, The Telegraph's Ashton Raze tells fans it's okay to shed a tear for the old "Devil May Cry" games, but not to get too sentimental and miss out on what's happening before their eyes:

"As 'DmC' progresses, it becomes clear that it is a phenomenal action game in its own right, with an interesting alternate take on the fiction and a sublime handle on action gaming."

"DmC: Devil May Cry" will be available for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
