Galaxy S2 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update Now Available

It's been a while, but Galaxy S2 owners are finally starting to get that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update they've been waiting for. The update was originally scheduled to go live back in September, but delays pushed it back to the point that it wasn't clear when it would finally come out.

Apparently, the time is now. Galaxy S2 users in the United Kingdom and Europe started informing media outlets that they are now receiving Jelly Bean updates over the air.

According to SamMobile, the update is now available in China and Spain. The Web site's tracking information is a couple of days old now, so it's possible that the upgrade is out in more countries, too.

If you absolutely can't wait for your phone carrier to release the update, though, you could always take some initiative and go download it yourself using Samsung's Kies desktop software.

Considering the number of features that Jelly Bean brings to the Galaxy S2, it's not surprising that users have been clamoring for it these past few months. Project Butter brings faster and smoother performance enhancements to the phone, and for a device that's two years old now, that's no small thing. There's also an overhaul of the user interface system, as the upgrade brings users the same UI that Galaxy S3 and Note 2 enjoy.

Additionally, Google Now is included, giving S2 owners access to Android's Siri alternative. Apple's digital assistant gets all the love (and, admittedly, the hate), but for many users Google Now is the superior option.

Rounding out the update are a few more features:

- Direct Call, Smart Stay, and Pop-up Play
- New Lockscreen With Many Customization Options
- TouchWiz Nature UX
- Samsung's S Cloud services
- Improved Camera features
- New Galaxy S3 Widgets
- Two home screen modes
- New Notification bar with more toggles

Unfortunately, Samsung's Photosphere app, which allows users to take panoramic photos, isn't anywhere to be found.

Still, with updates like this, it's no wonder so many Galaxy S2 owners have decided to hold on to their phones.
