iDevice users interested in jailbreaking their devices will soon be able to do so thanks to a team of new iOS hackers, "evad3rs". The team posted a link to their official Web site on Twitter under the Twitter handle @evad3rs to officially announce their untethered jailbreak for Apple iOS 6. They are naming the hack "evasi0n", the untethered iOS 6.x hack which works on several Apple products running the operating system iOS 6 or the newly released iOS 6.1.
The Website also alerts their followers of their progress of developing the hack; the team is currently finalizing the jailbreak. So far, the hackers have made the program compatible for downloading to Windows and OS X. They are currently working on making it compatible with Linux and will complete some more beta testing before releasing, according to the evasi0n Web site.
A recent tweet from evad3r member @Musclenerd hinted around about a possible Sunday release date for the untethered iOS 6 jailbreak. The current tethered jailbreak that exists for iOS 6 means that the device must be connected to a computer to run the jailbreak capabilities. Once the device is rebooted, the jailbreak would be lost. With an untethered jailbreak, the device is not required to be connected to a computer and the device remains jailbroken even after a reboot.
Jailbreaking, although legal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act can void warranties on Apple devices. Consumers often jailbreak their devices, as it makes the device more customizable. Jailbreaking allows users to gain root access to their devices and uninstall apps that the system normally would not allow to be removed. Also it opens up the possibility for users to run third party apps that are not supported or available in the App Store.
The new untethered jailbreak is compatible with about 22 iOS devices according to MuscleNerd. Some of the supported devices are the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini, iPod touch 4, iPod touch 5 and Apple TV2. Requirements for the unthethered jailbreak are a computer, running Windows (XP minimum), Mac OS X (10.5 minimum) or Linux (x86 / x86_64) , an iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 6.0 through 6.1 and a USB cable for connecting the device to the computer.
