'Criminal Minds' Season 13: Series Likely To Be Renewed In 2017 Despite Slumping Ratings And Thomas Gibson's Departure?

"Criminal Minds" has been one of the longest-running series of CBS and it is currently airing its 12th season. While the show's good ratings and high viewership has pushed the crime drama series to reach more than 11 years of broadcast, "Criminal Minds" season 12 is reportedly suffering from slumping ratings that might possibly lead to its cancelation.

"Criminal Minds" has been an interesting, mind-boggling TV series that has kept audiences deeply engrossed with each season. However, latest figures show how season 12 has relatively lost its appeal for viewers. The departure of the series' lead star, Thomas Gibson has affected the show's performance, and many fans looked at his dismissal as the end of the show. Some fans then threatened to boycott the series which was evident in the ratings recorded for the following episodes of "Criminal Minds" season 12.

With the series losing its lead actor who was last seen in season 12's second episode last October, the show has then been shadowed by countless cancelation rumors. Regardless of the decrease of viewers, recent reports claim that "Criminal Minds" still has a good chance for renewal. Talks also have it that the lower rating of the show is not enough reason to ax the show which has run for more than a decade now.

"Criminal Minds" season 12 still has seven episodes to air before it ends in early 2017, but fans are already requesting for its 13th installment. Although Gibson is already very much dead (or lost) on the show, the series was able to redeem itself as it managed to deliver exciting twists despite the absence of its famous Aaron Hotchner. Another renewal of the show is then expected to be announced before the year ends and its possible premiere is said to pick a May 2017 schedule.

Meanwhile, "Criminal Minds" season 12 shifted its focus toward Aisha Tyler's Dr. Tara Lewis. The "Mirror Image" episode heavily featured Dr. Lewis who became the latest target of the serial killer Mr. Scratch.

In a recent interview, Tyler talked about how she is doing in exploring her character who is now the show's center stage. "I think it was nice. In a lot of ways it was intense, but at a different pace," the actress said. "It was less procedural, it was less situational, it was more about these people's relationships and I couldn't have a better guy to do that with than with Joe," she continued.

"Criminal Minds" season 12 will air episode 8 on Wednesday, Dec. 7 before going on a brief hiatus for the holidays. The CBS long-running crime drama series airs every Wednesday night on CBS.
