'How To Train Your Dragon 3' Release Date Moved To March 2019; Director Teases Hiccup And Toothless Separation

"How to Train Your Dragon" fans will need to wait until 2019 to see Hiccup and Toothless' big screen comeback. The release date for "How to Train Your Dragon 3" was postponed again for another year. The third installment of the hit animation movie will premiere on March 1, 2019 instead of May 18, 2018 based on the last announcement.

The announcement was made by Universal Pictures on Tuesday, Dec. 6. "How to Train Your Dragon 3" was originally scheduled for June 2016 debut, but it was later changed to June 2017 and pushed back again to 2019.

According to film director Dean DeBlois, the upcoming movie will follow the "coming of age" of Hiccup and Toothless as they become the "chiefs of their respective tribes." Hiccup will be successful in his dream of making dragon utopia and Toothless will find a mate that can draw the Night Fury away. However, their peace will be disrupted and the two must make a difficult decision to save their kind.

It was reported previously that dragons may disappear at the end of the movie which means Hiccup and Toothless might go separate ways. "It's a dueling story where you have both characters trying to do what's right for their kind, and an eventual outcome where Hiccup is able to stand on his own," DeBlois said.

Deblois added that the story will end with the scene where the original book began -- an adult Hiccup is reminiscing the time when there were dragons -- suggesting that the dragons will indeed disappear. "Why and could they come back and the mystery of what all that is will be saved for the actual story," he said.

"How to Train Your Dragon 3" will serve as the finale for the franchise. Deblois said there might be spin-offs but a fourth entry is out of the question. The first "How to Train Your Dragon" animated film was released in 2010 while "How to Train Your Dragon 2" was released in 2014.
