Google ran a Google Glass Explorer contest that challenged everyday users to write in 50 words or less how they would use Google Glass in their lives. Winners would be able to pre-order the device for $1,500 and have bragging rights of being first on the block with Glass. Google's headpiece gadget is supposed to make us more present and less distracted by digital devices like our smartphones. This video takes a look at how the typical guy would use Google Glass.
The video was made by YouTube user DartanionLondon, and it gives you the viewpoint of a typical guy using Google Glass on a first date. Like most guys, he's going to put in some effort in finding out the interests of his potential new love. This research is usually done prior to the date or during, if the chemistry is right. But not this guy: he has Google on his head so he's going to use it in real-time in the hope of impressing his date, right in front of his eyes.
He uses Google Glass as his wingman for a first meeting at a coffee shop. He brings Google Glass to this date and gets a boost of confidence through an alert reminding him: "You are a pimp."
Once he gets his date's full name, naturally he looks her up on Google. When he sees her interest in dogs, it's time to search for dog jokes and also tells Google Glass to take a picture of a certain feature he's admiring on his date and staring at through Google Glass. When things are getting a bit boring, he can always watch a football game and play Minesweep while still staring his date in the face, pretending he's really present. I won't give everything away; you should check out the video for yourself. It has already been viewed over 1.1 million times and does a great job of showing how some guys would use Google Glass.
Will Google Glass really help us to be more present, more informed, more interested and be more of a pimp? It's not clear yet, but what is clear is that Google is getting a lot more free ideas of how people would like to use Google Glass. Maybe it will use those ideas when it begins selling the device later this year.
