Two Google Flagship Smartwatches Are Expected Next Year

In the first quarter of 2017, Google will be launching two new flagship smartwatches.

Google's Upcoming Smartwatches

According to Engadget, the market for smartwatches is not performing well, but this situation did not stop Google's plans to launch two flagship smartwatches in the first quarter of the next year. Perhaps that the tech giant company tries to leverage the launch of its upcoming Android Wear 2.0, scheduled to arrive in early 2017.

According to The Verge, Android Wear product manager Jeff Chang recently confirmed that two new flagship smartwatches would run on the updated platform. However, strictly speaking, they aren't Google watches. Chang noted that the watches will bear the brand of their manufacturer rather than Google, but Google will promote the wearable gadgets.

Wearables Still In Demand?

The manufacturer of the upcoming Google wearables has not be named, but Chang said that the company has produced in the past other Android Wear devices. It seems that Google's partner in producing the smartwatches has experience in software integration and hardware design for the watches.

While the new Google smartwatches had been rumored before, the high-tech company just confirmed now the upcoming launch. According to tech market analysts, this might be as part of a larger effort to convince consumers that smartwatches and other wearables are still in demand.

A top high-tech company such as Google could shake perceptions and push up the demand for smartwatches. With any luck, Google's involvement in the wearables market could drive sales and competition. This would also benefit Google indirectly, by spreading the interest on its Android Wear 2.0 platform.

It is expected that the existing Android Wear watches will get the update to Android Wear 2.0, following the launch of the new devices. The new platform comes with some new features, including support for Google's voice-controlled Assistant, standalone apps that don't require a phone to work and support for Android Pay.
