Actress Lindsay Lohan escaped jail time by agreeing to spend 90 days in a drug rehab facility. Charges against her have been settled as a result of this agreement Monday.
Lohan entered a no-contest plea to two misdemeanor charges in a Los Angeles court Monday. One was for a traffic accident last year and the other was for violating her shoplifting probation. Last summer, Lohan was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., when she crashed her Porsche into a dump truck on the Pacific Coast Highway.
She was charged with reckless driving and lying to a police officer, and her arrest earned her a violation of probation charge on top of that. "A suggestion, don't drive," said Los Angeles Superior Judge James Dabney to Lohan in ordering her sentence.
Lohan must spend 90 days in drug rehab and also get 18 months of psychotherapy. Her probation was extended for two years.
"This is it. You violate your probation, and we're not going to have discussions of putting you back on probation," said Dabney.
According to CNN, the police report said Lohan claimed she wasn't driving at the time of the accident involving her Porsche. Witnesses would have been called in by the prosecutor to testify that they saw Lohan behind the wheel.
"I think Lindsay needed to go and just deal with some of her issues. She got exactly what she needs," said Michael Lohan, Lindsay Lohan's father, on Monday.
Since January 2007, Lohan spent 250 days in five rehab facilities, admitting to drug and alcohol addiction in previous court hearings, which amount to a total of 20.
"Lindsay Lohan has been very fragile and very concerned by what's been happening here and the only thing I've been concerned about is that we've been able to give her story a very, very happy ending," said Mark Heller, Lohan's attorney.
