Apple is set to release the biggest iPhone yet, literally and figuratively.
The iPhone 8 is expected to be the one of the best if not the best devices to come out of Apple's stable. It should be. After all, it will come out in 2017, the 10th year since the first iPhone was introduced and changed the industry forever.
People are expecting the new iPhone to be as important as its earliest ancestor. But that is not the only big thing expected from the new Apple flagship smartphone.
It will also be literally huge.
Rumors circulated earlier that the new iPhone will sport a 5.8-inch display may have been confirmed with a new leak that surfaced a few days ago. DigiTimes uncovered details saying Samsung will be providing Apple with 4.7-, 5.5-, and 5.8-inch AMOLED panels. DigiTimes also learned that Nissha Printing of Japan will handle the supply of touch sensors for the AMOLED display panels while Samsung Display or TPK of Taiwan will take care of bonding the sensors and panels.
According to the leak, Samsung will provide the AMOLED displays exclusively. In fact, the Korean tech giant, a known rival of Apple, will be supplying around 20 million OLED panels each month.
Apple will be releasing a trio of iPhones this year. Two of the devices, the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, will sport TFT-LCD panels while the iPhone 8 will have the AMOLED one.
The news of an iPhone 7S and 7S Plus has been met with criticism.
Gordon Kelly of Forbes questions Apples decision to produce a couple of phones very similar to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Leaks show that the new iPhones are physically the same as their predecessors. The leak comes from Mac Otakara, a well-known personality in the tech industry who has a good track record of "guessing" new devices particularly Apple products.
