Lenovo Hints A 2017 'Microsoft-Friendly' VR Headset

It is said that 2016 was just the beginning of the virtual, augmented, and mixed reality era because 2017 will be the big year that tech companies will showcase the full potential and possibilities of these type of technologies. And for all Lenovo and Microsoft fans out there, there is good news for them to celebrate.

What's The New Gadget?

According to reports, Lenovo has used DES in Las Vegas, Nevada to introduce their prototype VR headgear that is supposedly "Microsoft-friendly." Though this is good news, there is a catch. The actual device is not yet finished, but will definitely be released later this year. As for its retail price, it is said to be less than $400 which is a decent price compared to the Oculus Rift.

Specs And Features

On first glance, one could say that the prototype resembles a lot like the PlayStation VR. The Lenovo VR headset weighs 350g. Inside the VR headset, it features two 1440 x 1440 OLED screens that according to sources, will give the VR headset a much higher resolution than the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift.

What makes the Lenovo VR really amazing is that because it runs on the Windows Holographic platform, it can independently feature a room-scale VR without the need to use any external cameras or sensors. All it needs is its own front-mounted cameras pre-installed on the headset that are capable of picking up depth information.

As for what kind of controllers will it have, reports claim that Lenovo won't be making any motion controllers exclusive for their VR headset. However, it is not the "wide-range compatibility" you're thinking of. For the motion controllers of the Lenovo VR headset, users will have to use a Xbox controller instead or any third-party controller that is compatible with the Windows Holographic, which according to other reports will arrive this year. But hey, at least you get higher resolution, no extra cameras and sensors needed a room-scale VR experience, and a decent price.
