Blogging platform Tumblr has crossed the 100-million-blog mark, a sign that it is continuing to remain popular as a social network. As of Wednesday, the New York-based social network's own meter said it hosted 100.1 million blogs.
Skewing toward younger bloggers with edgy templates, Tumblr has published nearly 45 billion posts since its launch overall. It keeps a counter on its About page, where the 100-million-blog milestone was "quietly" marked sometime this week, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Tumblr allows users to create a blog or multiple blogs and it's easy to customize them using themes or writing code. Facebook-like features include "like," while with the click of a button, users can also "reblog" a post, which is similar to re-tweeting.
The milestone is an important achievement for Tumblr as it competes against Facebook, Twitter and Google. According to the Times, Tumblr is behind its competitors in terms of users but has become popular with a younger demographic. A survey released earlier in the year suggested more young people use Tumblr than they do Facebook.
Tumblr last year announced that it was among the top 10 trafficked websites in the U.S. Globally, the social network reported it had 168 million worldwide users visit each month.
Earlier this month, we reported Tumblr has rolled out a plan to monetize its mobile app as it aims to turn its first profit ever in 2013, six years after its launch. Tumblr began allowing advertisers to pay for better placement of their ads. Users can also pay to "pin" a post to the top of their followers' dashboards, keeping it from being buried under a pile of more recent entries. Over the last six months, the number of users on Tumblr's mobile app has nearly quadrupled.
