Square Enix actually has a whole list of games coming out in 2017 including Kingdom Hearts III, and the remake of Final Fantasy VII, but a lesser-known game called Nier Automata has been the center of quite the controversy. Game director The game Yoko Taro, proves to be a good sport, and is playing along with the buzz surrounding the game's lead character, 2B.
The Issue
The issue with Nier Automata actually sprouted up after an image posted by a fan online pointed out that the developers had rendered a butthole on 2B, and players could actually see it if they looked closely in the game. It was said that the image was also taken after Platinum Games had released a demo for Nier Automata, and players were looking for creative ways to look up the protagonist's skirt.
The image has since been debunked as photoshopped, but nevertheless, a lot of discussion had been popping up online. This lead to Taro to release a statement, but the director doesn't seem to be as outraged as some people would expect him to be.
Taro's Comment
Taro, however, seems to be having fun with the spark that the images have been able to trigger, and has been joking for the gather all the images they could find of 2B's butt and post them online themselves. He writes, "[translated] Due to 2B's butt controversy, many outrageous drawings are being uploaded, but collecting and passing them around is a pain, so it would be great if someone could zip them all up and distribute them every week."
According to the Bitbag, Taro is actually quite known for his sense of humor when it comes to promoting his games, and the controversy surrounding Nier Automata is sure to have gotten a lot of buzz for Square Enix's upcoming title.
Nier Automata is a PS4 exclusive, and it's slated for a release on Feb. 23.
