Airbus Plans To Test Its Flying Car Prototypes By 2017

Faraday Future and Tesla might be racing to produce the best electric vehicle in the world but Airbus has another idea about futuristic cars. The company has been developing flying cars and according to the company's CEO Tom Enders, they are planning to test-drive the prototypes by the end of the year.

Driven with the goal of launching a fleet of flying taxis, Airbus is bent on taking transportation to a whole new level. At a conference that took place in Munich, Germany, Enders explained that the current technology makes it possible for urban transport to go above ground.

Airbus Flying Cars

Airbus decided to create the Urban Air Mobility division a year ago to study the best way to transport people in a vehicle that could transport multiple passengers. The prototype will be a helicopter-style vehicle. The company wants to create a transportation service similar to Uber but instead of using a car on the road, it is going to use flying taxis.

Enders believes that the Airbus flying cars could solve a lot of problems not just in transportation but also in city planning. The cost of using flying taxis instead of traditional cars would save billions since there is no need to build bridges or roads.

Airbus is currently the largest commercial helicopter makers in the world and they want to invest on the latest technologies to stay on top of its game. Enders commented that investing on these developments is necessary so they will not be left out in any business segment.

Flying Cars Design

Specific details on how Airbus plans to complete its flying cars are yet to be released to the public. However, many speculate that the vehicles will utilize the vertical take-off and landing. The first prototype is believed to have a design similar to the Ehang drone car complete with four rotors. While the promise of the Airbus flying car is promising, the project is still in experimentation stage.
