Sony is looking to capitalize on its very successful PlayStation brand and now the company is bringing PlayStation features and game controls to some of its Xperia smartphones. This could be a great move by the consumer giant, as it already has a healthy following and it could see some crossover success by adding some unique PlayStation features, complete with a working PS 3 Dual-Shock 3 controller.
Sony Xperia owners will be able to use the Xperia's HDMI support to connect the smartphone to a television for a much better gaming experience. Sony is tying this feature into its Sony Playstation Mobile Store where the company sells many of the classic Playstation games millions of people have grown up playing. It's a great strategy, but it's also a risky move on Sony's part.
Sony might want might to rethink this strategy. Sony may be trying to get PlayStation owners to buy Sony Xperia smartphones in order to get this capability, but unfortunately Sony is not a big enough player to limit these kinds of features to other Android smartphones.
Sony might want to think about licensing this to other Android manufacturers. where it will surely see much greater success. It's Sony's smartphone, so Sony is going to do what it wants to do. Nevertheless, the feature shows Sony's innovation and how it is trying to tie its hardware and services together. Getting a customer hooked on one of your successful products will surely make them consider some of your other offerings.
