‘Scarface’ Remake Will Be ‘Explosive!’ Release Date Announced

"Scarface" is a 1932 film which was critically acclaimed. It got a remake in 1983 starring Al Pacino, and it tells the story of Cuban refugee Tony Montana (Al Pacino) who arrives in Miami with nothing, but rises to become a powerful drug kingpin. Pacino's remake was a box office success, grossing $44 million, and it was even called one of the best mob films ever made.

The Remake Will Be "An Explosive Re-Imagining Of Scarface"

Universal is set to do a remake of "Scarface," and David Mackenzie and director-producer Pete Berg are going to be the movie's frontrunner. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mackenzie and Berg are already meeting with the studio's execs. The remake is scheduled to be released in August 2018.

Universal said that the remake will be a new film version, and that it will be "an explosive re-imagining" of one of the most iconic sagas in film history, USA Today said. The new script is polished by four-time Academy Award winners Joel and Ethan Coen, who did the Academy award-winning movie "No Country for Old Men."

"Scarface" Remake Will Now Be Based In Los Angeles

No lead actor or director has been formally announced yet. Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day" and "The Equalizer") was supposed to direct the "Scarface" remake, but reports said that due to scheduling conflicts over creating a sequel to "The Equalizer," he had to turn the project down. Some reports say that Fuqua did try to coordinate if he could work on both "Scarface" and part two of "The Equalizer," but Universal just went on ahead to look for another director. But recent reports say the studio is now close to landing a new helmer.

When asked about the movie previously, Fuqua said that the remake touches the modern day, not just gangsterism but how everything moves now on the streets. The remake will maintain the immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films, but it will now be based in Los Angeles and focus on a Mexican immigrant. Some rumors say that "Rouge One: A Star Wars Story" actor Diego Luna will star in the film.
