Mac OS X 10.9: New iOS Multitasking Feature To Improve Performance, Battery Life And More (Rumors)

It is being reported that Apple will be adding a major feature from iOS to Mac OS X 10.9 that will speed up the desktop operating system, add improved performance, and possibly increase battery life to its MacBook computers to bring them closer to iPhone and iPad battery life.

When Apple unveiled Mac OS X 10.7 Lion it added many features that were already found in iOS to its desktop operating system. Some of the features Apple built into Mac OS X Lion were support for its Apple Push Notification Service. The Calendar and Address Book apps both received facelifts to take on more of an iOS look. The Mac App Store was designed to be a one stop shop for OS X users to find applications in the same way the iOS App Store works, and Launch Pad was a new application launcher that mirrors the launcher found in iOS.

When Apple announced OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, it took even more features and applications from iOS. Messages, Notes, Reminders, and Notification Center were just some of the features and apps to make the jump to OS X. According to sources, Mac OS X 10.9 will be bringing a major feature from iOS that could speed up OS X while also bringing iPhone and iPad-like battery life to Apple's MacBook line.

"According to one source, Apple has been testing a new multi-tasking system for OS X that is similar to the quick-app-switcher function on iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. The multitasking feature will be functional for applications in the background, according to this person. Additionally, Apple could use app-pausing technologies from iOS to pause background application processes in OS X. This is significant as full performance could be given to foreground apps, which could help optimize battery life on Apple's notebook computers."

The source also notes not to expect any major interface changes in OS X 10.9, as this update will focus on "power-user features." Finder is expected to be updated with tabbed browsing while also adding the ability to add tags in Finder. The Safari web browser is rumored to get a redesigned backend which will bring "improved page loading, speed, and efficiency." Mac OS X 10.9 is expected to add the ability to keep a dedicated Space or full-screen app open on a single monitor within a multiple monitor setup, something many users have been asking Apple to incorporate into OS X.

Apple will be showing off Mac OS X 10.9 and iOS 7 at its World Wide Developer's Conference which begins on June 10. We might also get to see the rumored iPhone 5S at this event as well.
