Coke Plus Diet Soda Claims To Improve Health

In its quest to get on with the health trend, Coca Cola announces that their new Coke Plus Diet Soda is now healthier. To help digestion and ward off metabolic problems, the soda company has now added 5 grams of fiber in the drink. This news is making people rejoice since drinking this kind of beverage has been etched in the modern lifestyle.

However, the fizzy drink is going to be available only in Japan for now. Going on sale this March, the drink is sugar and calorie-free and with fiber to supplement those who are lacking this essential food component. Coke Plus Diet Soda was actually first launched years ago but was taken off the shelves.

Now, it’s back and some people are calling it the healthiest Coke variant ever. There’s a lot of excitement about the claim that the added fiber could reduce fat absorption from food if you drink it while eating. What’s more, Coca-Cola increases the hype by saying that drinking one bottle a day with meals will guarantee the lowering of blood triglycerides, which is essential for a healthy heart.

Sounds too good to be true. However, a Harvard nutritional biochemist and health author is warning consumers not to be fooled by this health hype. Dr. Shawn Talbott says that there is no such thing as a healthy soda, the Shape reports.

She adds that it's just an attempt to capitalize on healthy ingredient trends, such as fiber, to distract consumers how unhealthy the drink really is. Firstly, Talbott explains, just 5 grams of fiber is not enough for an effective fat absorption. Women need 30 grams of fiber daily, so clearly, the advertising is misleading.

Another serious issue about the drink is the interaction of fiber with the load of sugar present in the soda, which results to the loss of healthy function of fiber in the gut. Also, artificial sweeteners have serious health risks of their own, Talbott adds. Finally, according to the Independent, people who have tried the new Coke Plus Diet Soda say that it's like drinking an ultra-sweet cola-flavoured jelly, and that they would give a high-five to anyone who can finish the drink.
