Microsoft Game Studios' former Creative Director Peter Molyneux confesses that despite his having known "a lot" about the forthcoming Xbox 720, he is nonetheless "fascinated" to see what the upcoming May 21 unveiling of the successor to the Xbox 360 will reveal.
Molyneux also disclosed that he has been keeping up on what Microsoft has continued working on since his departure, and he hopes that the company will focus less on the controversial "always online" aspect of the Xbox 720 and more on the games themselves.
The Edge spoke with Molyneux on his interest in the Xbox 720. In the Edge article, published on Thursday, May 2, the site also printed further quotes from the Molyneux interview that may surprise some fanboys looking forward to the Xbox 720.
"I'm sure they'll have put a lot of time and thought and rehearsal into that press briefing, but I'm going to be fascinated to see what the hardware is, and how it will fit into this new world that we're in now - this new world of hyper-connectivity, of super-portability," Molyneux said when it came to his thoughts on the Xbox 720. "Or whether they'll double-down and say 'you know what? We are the games console, and that's what we define ourselves as' and say [they] don't really care about hyper-connectivity or hyper-portability."
In the Edge interview about the Xbox 720, Molyneux also admitted that if it were up to him, he would make sure the gaming console would turn out to be more about the game console aspect itself and less about "an entertainment hub."
Molyneux said that, as a gamer himself, he's interested in games and not all the other bells and whistles. He seems to believe other gamers will feel the same way about the Xbox 720.
"When they [Microsoft] start to mix all this other stuff in there I'm kind of slightly like: 'look, I don't want another way of looking at Facebook'," Molyneux said. "You know, I've got all the ways of looking at Facebook. I don't want another way of looking at Netflix. Just give me what I've paid my £299 for, and that is to play amazing, incredible computer games."
"It'll be fascinating which way they [Microsoft] jump," Molyneux said.
