Xbox Infinity Name A Hoax, Says Guy Who Made It Up

The interwebs were abuzz recently with news that Xbox Infinity was confirmed as the moniker for Microsoft's next-generation console. The title came by way of an official-looking Xbox Infinity banner that sort of looked like something Microsoft put together, although online commentators quickly pointed out that the lettering was slightly slanted.

Although Xbox Infinity may still wind up as the console's name, the rumor lost a lot of steam a few days back when a Reddit user with the handle C-Ron came out as the creator of the Xbox Infinity banner that's since gone viral.

"Discovered that everyone thinks a fake Xbox Infinity logo I made in Photoshop is the real deal. I didn't react when I saw smaller websites using it, but when I saw Ars Technica and GameSpot use it, I facepalm'd," C-Ron wrote on Reddit.

A number of Reddit users have posited the idea that C-Ron is in fact a Microsoft employee and the whole thing is some elaborate marketing strategy, but this doesn't seem likely given the slanted text on the original Xbox Infinity graphic. It's beginning to look more and more likely that the Xbox Fusion moniker will be the one Microsoft goes with, especially following Microsoft's purchase of a bevy of Xbox Fusion domain names, including XboxFusion.com, XboxFusion.info, XboxFusion.biz,XboxFusion.de, XboxFusion.co.uk.

The Xbox Fusion names aren't proof of anything though, as Microsoft also recently purchased the domains XboxNext.com and XboxGold.com

In the meantime, we're deferring to Xbox 720, at least until something official is announced. It's still unclear when the Xbox 720 release date might occur, but Microsoft is slated to unveil the console at an event on May 21.
