New details have leaked about Apple's rumored iWatch and it's being reported that Apple is currently testing 1.5-inch OLED displays to use in its upcoming smartwatch.
It's no secret that some of the biggest technology companies are looking beyond smartphones and tablets, and are looking at wearable technology. Companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung are all reportedly working on a smartwatch of their own. As the smartphone and tablet markets get even more over saturated, the big players are looking at ways to keep you using their technology in new ways, like on your body. Google Glass is probably the most recognizable example of wearable tech; it brings apps, information and features to a wearable headpiece that resembles a pair of glasses and runs the Android operating system.
Two new reports out today give us a little more insight into Apple's upcoming iWatch. Macotakara is reporting that Apple is currently testing a 1.5-inch OLED display for its iWatch. According to the report, Apple has already tested a 1.8-inch display but felt that the display was too large. The 1.5-inch display would make the iWatch's display close in size to the sixth-generation iPod nano's 1.55-inch touch display. Many consumers loved this particular iPod nano because it could easily be converted into a watch by using many third party watchband accessories created for the device. Apple even updated the software on the iPod nano to include several different watch faces, it sounds like Apple was already well into planning its own smartwatch in 2010.
In another report out today, the Daily News is reporting that Apple's longtime manufacturing partner Foxconn has already received orders to build Apple's smartwatch. According to the report, Apple has only ordered a "small scale trial introduction" with only about 1000 Apple smartwatches being built.
As with all Apple rumors take these with a huge grain of salt, but if true it sounds like the iWatch could possibly debut some time later this year.
