When Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 back in February, it announced that the console's release date would arrive this coming holiday season.
While that was certainly good news for those in Japan and the United States, it remained unclear when the PlayStation 4 would see a release in other parts of the world, namely the UK and the rest of Europe.
In the past, Sony's game systems launched in Japan and the United States first, followed by Europe later. With Microsoft promising the Xbox One will land around the world this year, would Sony follow suit with the PlayStation 4? In the UK, at least, it seems like it will.
Sony took out a full-page ad in the UK newspaper Metro, announcing that the PlayStation 4 would be released there this year.
"Now is the time," the ad reads. "The world's greatest players are going to entertain, create, and amaze on the ultimate stage. This year a new generation will push the boundaries of play and share in moments of wonder. This year players will become legends.
"Coming 2013."
When The Verge reached out to Sony for comment, the company's spokesperson confirmed the timetable for release.
"We announced at the PlayStation Meeting event on Feb 20th that PS4 would be coming in 2013, the adverts are simply re-stating that message," the spokesperson said.
A 2013 release date likely means that the PlayStation 4 will arrive sometime in October or November. While Sony revealed the PS4's controller, features, as well as some game footage in February, it still has many other details to dish out, including the console's form factor.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo is only a few weeks away, and we can expect Sony to unleash a flood of PS4 information then, including price, release date, and launch titles. We still don't know Sony's policy concerning used games, so it'll be interesting to see how Sony positions itself opposite Microsoft, which is currently experiencing blowback over the cloudy details of its console's always-online requirements and used games policy.
